Pings:
The pay here is not bad considering you save on gas on commuting to work. If they like you, you get raises often. But that would mean you would have to a lot of brown nosing to get on the "madden pets" list.
There is no respect in this company unless your on the "madden pet" list. This place is so messed up, I don't think they know what the true meaning of respect is. They figure, if they don't like you, you're out and they make coming to work so crappy that you just give up. And after you do that, the smack talk begins about how you couldn't "hack it".
There are no benefits. You get nothing until you put in your 1 year. And if something happens to your kid, spouse, or any other immediate family member, good luck. They don't care if someone is on the brink of death. All they see is that if your husband has a massive heart attack and dies, YOU don't need a job cause you just got his life insurance money. So, you're next on the "lay off" list. Cause, you know, I mean "she has her mothers trust fund, her husbands life insurance, and her mortgage is paid off. So, she doesn't need the job..she has money and she's set...let's lay her off." This is how the decide who to keep and who stays. don't believe the crap they feed you. Heartless.
There is no room for balance if you work here. Expect your family to be neglected. If you are NOT married with kids, they automatically assume you have no life and you can work whenever and for however long because theres no one to go home to. They just figure you have no social life and you live strictly for the madden corporation.
There is no job security. Refer above in regards to the lay offs. The bosses here are moody. If they don't like you today, expect something to head your way. If you're not being busted for something or another, they'll find a way to flag your personnel file with some crap.
Career potential? that doesnt exist. You're stuck to whatever job you got hired for. ESPECIALLY if the bosses dont like you and the FAVORITES on the list don't either.
Location: THE ONLY AWESOME THING about this place. no traffic, parking isn't too far from the building.
The "little" people are what make working here nice. I said "little"..you know the ones that just sit there and hammer away actually getting the work done and get no credit for it. They are the only things I miss about this place.
The building is nice. The offices are nice. But, that's about it. It's like one of those trick candies. The outside is nice and sweet, but when you get to the inside, it's crap.

As a former manager at TMC, I would not recommend anyone to work for this company. There is a lot of work place drama, back stabbing and I took many a ride on the back wheel of the number nine bus that is always going by, because of certain employees trying to throw you under it.
The owner of the company is a tyrant, the VP's are just as bad, no one assumes any responsibility for their actions, but are quick to point the finger to the other person, so save their own ass.
The one and only thing this place has going for it is the location, if it were not for the location they would probably have more difficulty than they already have trying to retain employees.
Benefits are not that great, they have teaser ads listing the salary for positions and then when you get hooked, suddenly you get much less money than what was expected.
Hourly people have it much worse, as there is no traditional grace period for punching in/out, most companies give a five to seven minute window. These people will dock you if you are one minute late.
This is a perfect company if you have absolutely no life, no family members and no personality. The 45 hour work week is very taxing and if you have personal committments to deal with i.e. doctors appt, child problems at school etc you are expected to do on "your" time, and as there is a 45 hour work week, that may be a difficulty.

The Vice Presidents and managers here are terribly unprofessional and unfriendly.
On the plus side there's no traffic and free tea/coffee, but that just means you're at work on time and wide awake yet unhappy.
By PMR
They just dont care....But they do care about all those expensive family vacations...And they try to bribe you with lame ass christmas parties...lol

There are several things to seriously consider before you decide to take a job here:
1) You get NO sick leave/vacation for the first year.
2) There's NO flex time to make up hours - salary or hourly - you'd have to beg but they don't normally allow this.
3) There are NO breaks for the 9- hour work days/45 hour work week except for the hour lunch.
4) You are NOT allowed to leave work premises (refer to #3), unless you're a sales account executive, eveyone else stays in and suffers.
5) Your pay gets docked 15 minutes if you're one minute late in the morning or for lunch, so you're better off calling out sick for the day if morning traffic is not favorable.
6) They give you a hard time to get an UNPAID personal day, whether you're moving or your kid's play, expect rejection.
7) Managers are overall unfriendly and seldom acknowledge you after your first-day introduction (because they think they're better than you? - who knows the why).
8) If you work fewer than 40 hours, you're considered part-time, your benefits get cut.
9) You need to give at least 20+ days before resigning this job or else you are deemed "unrehirable."
Last thing to consider:
10) Turnover is around 40% (if not higher) - for a reason.

overall i wouldn't advise anyone to apply to this company. it's not a feelgood place where you will be in any way acknowledged for anything you do. if you are acknowleded for something, it will be negatively (as in you will be blamed for failures). the company doesn't nurture its employees in an effort to promote from within. people don't last long enough to get promoted, and they in no way feel nurtured. there is no company unity. employee morale is pretty much low all the time.
By tmc old timer
there are opportunities for growth but this is usually due to the high turnover. when your dept falls from in adequately staffed (let's say 3) to skeletal (1), of course you're bound to move up. you're the only sucker left. however, when you do take the bump in pay and change in title, you're also stepping up to the plate and must be aware that you will be at fault for anything negative that happens. despite the fact that you're understaffed and overworked, anything that goes wrong will be your fault. when you're unable to handle the job, it'll be your fault. you will be demoted (title and salary) and most likely berated for your poor performance.
By tmc old timer
despire putting in 45 mandatory hours a week (and often putting in more than that), you will not be financially rewarded for your efforts. the reason you'll be given varies from economic downturn, the company not meeting certain goals, etc. there is an annual review but you won't get more than 2% increases.
another thing to note is that salaries listed in ads are often overly inflated. when you actually get the job, you'll be told that you're not completely qualified, therefore they will offer you less pay than advertised.
By tmc old timer
this is probably the worst part of working at tmc. everyone is out watching their own backs. but, once you see what really goes on, can you really blame them? there are no real 'friendships' other than those developed over griping about the job. it often feels like it's us (staff) against them (management/owner). but, most of the time even the managers/vps fall into the us category. it's basically everyone against the owner. he's a very difficult person to work for as his expectations are outrageous. he expects perfection and when something goes wrong, he blows up like a volcano. no one is safe from his wrath. he will yell at anyone in front of everyone. no one is safe. it's really outrageous that he gets away with this, but you'll find that they have their okoles covered pretty good. i haven't known any lawsuits against this company to be successful, although i've known of several. it is totally demoralizing to work here. you'll become a shell of the person you are. there is no flexibility when it comes to personal time, family time, clocking in, etc. there are no exceptions because they're afraid they'll have to make it for everyone and people will run amuck.
By tmc old timer
when I worked here i had to temporarily fill in for two positions because two people had just quit along with MY existing responsibilities for several months without any complaints. however when it was time for my raise, I got some lousy 1.3 percent raise - a sad rate that does NOT keep up with inflation. it was a joke. it was like working for a retail company and getting a raise of a quarter or something. i knew there was something wrong here and was one of the reasons why i left. needless to say, don't expect to be rewarded financially if you're not management - you're just a doormat.

cheap stuff not even made in hawaii being sold to the grapey tourists that'll buy ANYTHING! you'd think for a company that boasts about their hawaiiana products, they'd at least sell stuff actually made here. so sad...
By who cares
i agree with the post below. the only reason you grow in this company is cause the people above you all left.
By yup
Their slogan and logo "Welcome to the Islands" is a joke. The long name sounds more like a neighbor island tour company and not a made-in-China souvenir wholesaler. Secondly, there's nothing "welcoming" about the cold environment of this company. Not unless they're trying to be ironic, then the joke's lost on me. It's more like "Welcome to the Islands...you can quit now."
By PMR
all baloney! she deserves an award for the great acting ability to make you believe they are all just as "warm and nice" as she is. It's all an act you scoop you in and make you sign all kinds of agreements to lock you in. if you decide to quit, they make your life hell when trying to find another job thanks to all that crap they made you AGREE to. READ THREE TIMES AND ASK QUESTIONS BEFORE SINGING ANYTHING AT THIS COMPANY. don't be duped like the rest of us did.
By glub
from my experience, dont sign anything until you take it home and always get everything promised in writing. yes, its that bad. and take everything they say with a grain of salt.
By Proud_Dad
The overall feeling of this company doesn’t hit you until months later b/c I really liked it here in the beginning, then you get the real vibe of the company.
An ex. is when one of the vps tells her staff that unless they have some ideas to make money, only then they are welcome in her office (in otherwords, dont even bother talking to her) that pretty much cements the company’s "profit before people" mentality and everything about this place.
There is no aloha for the employees here. What a sad shame cuz hawaii is too small to treat people like this and think that people are "okay" with this.
By da88grad
This year they decided to do a July warehouse sale at the last minute. And in November the warehouse sale is now 2 days long. All but one day is considered a volunteer day. If you DON'T volunteer for the entirety of both sales, you MUST use a vacation day for jan 2nd 2009. HOWEVER, the company WILL BE CLOSED on that day anyway.
So in other words, if you don't volunteer your weekends for TMC, you are punished by losing a vacation day.
You only get 7 after working one year. TMC does not do the usual 1 week vacation and 1 week sick after 1 year like most places. It's 7 only..period. sick or personal..that's it.
So what if you have kids and you're trying to save your pto for a rainy day? YOU'RE SOL.
Not only that, but if you don't volunteer, you're put on the outcast list and treated like your crap...as if they don't do that enough there already
Is it legal to "force" an employee to use a PTO day even though the company is going to be closed that day anyway? What if that employee decides...well...then I'll work on that day even though they offices will be closed because they don't want to lose their hard earned pto day?
NOPE..can't do it. too bad. who cares...right TMC management?
By ShortEndoftheStick
The rule at TMC is that if you punch in ONE minute late, you get docked 15 minutes of pay. (This applies to hourly employees) If you punch out just a few minutes AFTER your shift, you don't get any OT at all. You must punch out 15 minutes AFTER your shift and it must be pre-approved OT to get paid for it.
This company distrusts employees to the maximum power. Their outlook is that all employees that work there WILL try to squeeze every cent out of them.
So, before you even have that thought in your head, they already established this system where it's virtually impossible to screw them over by just a few minutes of your life.
If you're a salary employee they ENSURE that they put the word EXEMPT in your salary adjustment letter so that you absolutey DON'T qualifiy for ANY overtime at all. Even if you're working 110+ hours per pay period.
Do employees even have rights against being overworked like this?
When you become a manager here, working beyond overtime is not an option, ITS MANADATORY and it's EXPECTED of you.
You're already there 10 hours a day. How much more can someone put into this company? Especially when the owner is so quick to adjust your salary and take away your 401K matching when times are bleak? So he can taketh away yet you still have to give "blood" to the company for their benefit?
Raises are few and far between. It's sad when employees who do exemplary work decline PROMOTIONS because of the STRESS that comes with the position.
The stress levels when you're a manager at this company is not the kind of stress you may be thinking. The expectations are outrageous and heaven forbid you get called in to their offices to explain the if's, and's and why's. When the bottom line was that the decisions were made based on HIS suggestions and wants.
But he FORGETS what he said and agreed upon. EVEN if you were to get it in writing, it doesn't matter. The question then becomes, "Well, if you knew it was a bad decision, why didn't you SAY SOMETHING EARLIER?"
Because you're the boss and you sign my paycheck so like a good servant I will do as you please.
If you don't follow the Madden rules and "culture" your outcasted and looked down upon.
If you don't volunteer your time where everyone else does, your shunned and punished by having your PTO FORCEFULLY taken away from you.
If you don't follow their unspoken norms in and around the office, you're the talk of the building.
Because everyone spends so much time within the confines of the building, people see more of their co-workers than the do their families. Spouses are used to "keeping your dinner warm" and going to bed without you home. You missing your childs birthday party festivities and showing up late is NONE of the maddens' problem because they don't care. If you're child is sick and you need to leave to take care of them, you're interrogated.
It's sad when people get sick and are out the first thing people think is that you're out job hunting.
If you come in to work all dressed up one day, they ask if you have an interview somewhere.
What does this tell you? People coming and going is such a common occurrence that it's almost expected behavior.
And sadly, it's true. And by the first week, you can already tell how long a person will last.
It's come to the point where they have to MAKE the new employee COMMIT to staying a certain amount of months BECAUSE they KNOW that after 2 months that person will QUIT.
So sad yet they do nothing to fix the problems.
They continue to BLAME the employee. Here's how the cope with the loss. They make these statements to the current employees:
It was better this way.
She/He just couldn't handle the pressure.
He/she was just too YOUNG and doesnt know that they want.
He/She didn't do good work anyway.
He/She didn't have the right personality for the job.
Every lame excuse you can think of, they've used it.
Hey, whatever helps them to sleep at night.
The bottom line is, the problem is THE COMPANY and those who RUN IT.
I wonder, has it ever occurred to any of them that NO ONE cares about the stipulation that if you don't put in minimum 20 working days notice you are banned from every working there again?
The only reason people put in the ridiculous 20 days of extended hell time is because of the WORRY that YOU folks will badmouth them and not give them a GOOD (and probably well deserved) recommendation to their next place of employment.
This island is small. Sooner or later you'll run out of GOOD and TRULY QUALIFIED people to have HELPING you RUN your circus.
Because all the good ones who were WORTH every penny have wised up and LEFT.
For the ones who continue to stay, kudos to you for putting up with the one company that truly deserves the WORST WORKPLACE IN HAWAII AWARD.

There isn't any. And even if there was, the SMART ones don't take it. It's not worth it. More responsibilities, longer hours, for less pay. The gross yearly salary they offer you is probably great. But the hours they expect you work is absurd. Promotiom=salary employee=longer hours and no OT pay.
JUST SAY NO!!
By yea
NO talking.
No radios allowed in certain departments.
Absolutely no personal calls. So NEVER EVER pick up your cell phone for any reason while at work. You will get cited.
No snacking at your desk unless you want the BOSS to pick at your food too (and he will).
No laughing out loud. The office MUST always be at 0 noise level to where you can hear the AC blowing through the vent.
No leaning on the glass panes around the "corrals". The bosses wife will not hesitate to BUST your jaws about it in front of everyone.
Try to sit at your desk as much as possible. If they see your seat empty often (even if it is for work related issues) they automatically assume you're walking around socializing. There are a few that do, and trust me, they don't last long in this company.
Do not use the company phone AT ALL for any phone personal phone calls. They love to track that and BLAST you with it when they get tired of you and they need a reason to get rid of you.
Do not surf the web AT ALL at work. They love to track that too and use that to get rid of you as well. Although the IT manager does it all the time. Not to mention he sleeps during the day at his desk or in the back computer room too.
One more thing about him. He's the only person that makes his own hours. Comes in at 10 cause he worked till 8 the night before. But the rest of the managers still have to come in on time no matter WHAT TIME they left the night before. What does the IT guy know or have on the MADDENS that allow them to let him do this at this company?
When going down into the warehouse MAKE SURE TO STOP DIRECTLY IN FRONT OF GIL'S OFFICE and make eye contact with someone before going into the warehouse. If not, GIL will rip you a new bunghole. Or he'll send his admin to do it for him.
No one is allowed in the FOOD room without Pansy's permission. She doesn't like people going direct to the source for info. All correspondence must be filtered though her because as she has said, "the people in there are SO STUPID. So come to me for info cause they don't know what the hell they're doing in there!"
By bull
It was a wonderful experience. That's how I got suckered into working there. The one thing that was SKIMMED over was the explanation of PTO. She made it seem like taking time off would be so easy to do. She made it seem like because the company is family owned, they understand what families needs are.
It's like going through a firing squad to get any time off.

if the clients are the MADDEN DAUGHTERS, you darn tootin' the customer service will be good. or else they're gonna call their daddy and have the problem FIXED. and that means YOU.

Didn't you see the ceramic line in pricebusters? They used to be carried in higher end dept stores. In other words, just wait it out. Don't pay those high prices. Eventually, you can get it for a buck at the dollar mania store the same time you go to pick up some pixie sticks and gummi worms for the kids!
By sellout
When you plan to leave the company, the HR woman tries to give you a guilt trip during interviews by telling you that
1.) you have a mortgage to pay
2.) you have kids to feed
3.) the job market sucks
4.) if all else fails: she'll tell you that you lose your chance of being rehired back to the company (this is when you try not to laugh at her face).

What's the point of an exit interview when they KNOW they're not going to do anything about your grievances?
Why even bother ASKING, "So why are you leaving?" when you KNOW why?
It's such a waste of time that most people bullshit their way through it and only do the exit interview to appease the management.
Don't they realize that the employees are much sharper than they think? They KNOW for a fact that all their words don't go past HR or other managers? It never reaches the person it really matters to, THE OWNER. And even if the words do get transmitted to him, it's not like he cares enough to change to make a difference because the person claiming the grievance is GONE.
What he doesn't realize is that the exiting employee is NOT the only one with that same grievance, MOST of them all do.
Because the exit interview is for shits and giggles, most people just fluff their way through it cause all they want is to GET OUT OF THERE AS QUICKLY AS POSSIBLE. Especially because they have all been warned by OTHER past employees that they had the same grievance and things STILL haven't changed. They still the run the business exactly the same way. So obviously, NOTHING they said mattered.
The Maddens should be ashamed of themselves.
People literally jump and and down and run out of the building FOR THE LAST TIME screaming in joy.
I guess they're the type of people that turns a blind eye and deaf ear because what they THINK they don't know, doesn't exist.
All I gotta say is...Yea, keep telling yourself that.
By run for the hills
